Preventing 'last minute' running injuries

Lots of you are anxious about doing all this training ahead of the London Marathon only to fall short at the final hurdle through injury. Here is some basic advice for avoiding last minute injuries.

Tips on how to resolve Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis, a painful condition affecting the soft tissues of the heel and sole of the foot, has come up in the clinic a few times over the past week with our Marathon runners. The following is a typical scenario for you and some basic advice… I hope it helps those of you that are struggling with this problem.

Blisters and Runners

It’s soooo frustrating when your training is hindered by something so simple, so small, yet so painful!  Blisters are a sign that your running shoes don’t suit your running style and your foot posture, or that the fit is incorrect. Therefore, all the advice that I’ve given regarding getting the correct shoes apply and this is your first port of call.

Marathon Training

It’s at this time of the year that we get an increase in running-related injuries to deal with. This is a combination of the evenings getting a little longer with less of an excuse to huddle indoors, and for those that are training for The Virgin London Marathon, the runs are getting longer. Problems, if they are going to, start to surface. Over the next nine weeks, as we commence the countdown to race day, I will post some snippets of Owl Wisdom based on common questions and injuries that I have dealt with  over the years, and years and years!!

Over the past 20 years, I've seen a lot of 'back-fixers' for my perennially bad back. They've all helped to some extent. But none of them had the nerve to do what Anna has done, which is to not just ease the immediate pain, but to convince me to embark on a full-scale programme of rehabilitation to re-educate my postural muscles into doing the things they have spent years avoiding doing. It is a long, slow and frustrating process, but we are inching in the right direction, which is hugely encouraging after years of slow deterioration.
